Book: Fiction First Aid
Movies/T.V. Series- get permission slip (up to rated R)
Lecture- I will lecture from the class book Fiction First Aid by Raymond Obstfeld. This will include excerpts from the book as well as clips from movies/T.V. series to illustrate certain points regarding the construction of a story. It is for this reason that students need to sign and turn in the movie permission slip. This film viewing will be primarily regulated to short clips.
Independent Reading/Author Journal- Students need to pick a book in their selected genre. It should be an author they admire. The student will be reading and taking detailed notes on how the author constructs his/her story.
Writing- As this is a Creative Writing class the writing day is of tremendous value. The student should expect to write 5-10 pages a week. The writing should be fairly enjoyable as it is from the student’s imagination. The student’s aim is to start and hopefully finish a novel or short story during the span of this year-long class.
Workshops- Students will be expected to contribute to the workshops both as an author and as a critic. Each week the class will be discussing at least 3 student manuscripts. The student must come to class prepared. This means that the student has read their classmates work and has made corrections/suggestions and is ready to share with the class.
